'We salute you': why this napping mum is our new hero
Author and mum Glennon Doyle Melton was attending a soccer game when she noticed one of the mothers do something heroic.
She lay down at the side of the pitch. Threw a jumper over her head, and fell asleep.
We honestly wish we had thought of doing that.
Instead of questioning why the mother was napping through the game, if she was sick or on night-shifts, Melton praises her ability to recognise her need to recharge.
Sharing a cheekily snapped picture on Instagram, she celebrates this mum for her ability to balance showing up to support her child, and much needed shut-eye.
"I give you MY NEW HERO: This soccer mom at my kid’s last game," Doyle wrote.
"Whilst all the other moms stood on the sidelines with great concern and worry and volume: this hero laid her body down on the ground, her head down on her purse, and her jacket over her face – and napped."
Impressively, she still managed to show her support, even in napping mode:
"Every once in a while, the sideline would wake her and she’d raise her arm and say: yay."
Now that is multitasking.
Melton continues to say that this mum has managed to tread the line between 40 winks and cheering on a sporting event she's probably been to a thousand times.
"I love her. Her entire existence said: I’m showing up for my kid. But I’m not gonna pretend I’m not exhausted about it.
"TO WOMEN WHO FREAKING REST WHEN THEY’RE TIRED….Let us know them. Let us raise them. Let us be them."
We would follow this woman to the ends of the earth, and so would Melton:
"I would like to formally nominate this Soccer Mom Hero as the President of the Women Who Have Run Out Of Effs To Give Club. I will be Secretary in Charge of Meetings. There will be no meetings. "
Round of applause for napping soccer mum!
