Tomorrow is no ordinary Friday! Here's what's happening all over the country
This Friday is Switch on Culture Night with venues and public spaces across the island of Ireland as they open their doors to host a programme of free late-night entertainment, as part of an all-island celebration of arts, heritage and culture.
Now in its thirteenth year, Culture Night returns in 2017 with its biggest programme to date, and there are plenty of family-friendly activities taking place around the country.
1. Chester Beatty Library, Co. Dublin
Listen to tales of kings, dragons and princesses and the battles between good and evil. The family storytelling is at 6:15pm and is suitable for all ages. Take a guided tour of the Library's treasures at 6.30pm, 7.30pm, 8.30pm or pick up a family pack/drawing pack between 6pm to 8pm.
2. Dance Theatre of Ireland, Co. Dublin
Dance the night away! Drop into Dance Theatre of Ireland’s Centre for Dance in Dun Laoghaire for a night of free taster classes, including: Hip Hop, Modern Dance, Contemporary Dance, Well-Dance for Seniors, Tango, Zumba and more.
3. Dublinia, Co. Dublin
With four exciting exhibitions, you can visit Viking and Medieval Dublin, see archaeology as a History Hunter and climb the medieval St Michael’s Tower. See Dublin from a new perspective and come away knowing more about its citizens throughout the ages! You can wander through Dublinia’s historic walls from 5:30pm-8pm.
4. Gallery Zozimu’s, Co. Dublin
From 6pm-10pm artists Mary Conroy and Kate O’Kelly will present a family-friendly workshop. They will use 2D flat-pattern paper nets to construct geometric 3D shapes to create personalised, decorated paper forms that participants can take home. There will also be Play With Clay for all the family.
5. Flotsam and Jetsam Family Art Workshop, Co. Clare
Discover the world of art with artists Marianne Slevin for a fun family workshop, where you will learn how to transform your beach finds into works of art! This interactive art session will run from 5pm-7pm.
6. “The Secret of Kells” – Family Film Night at Kildare Town Library, Co. Kildare
Magic and mythology, light and darkness, good and evil are balanced in this enchanting tale of Brendan, Brother Aidan and the Vikings. From 5pm-8:30pm enjoy a visually beautiful animated film from Directors Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey with voice cast of Brendan Gleeson, Evan McGuire, Mick Lally and Christen Mooney.
7. Family History and Local History Open Evening, Co. Cork
From 6pm-8pm walk in genealogy and newspaper archive research. Visit the library during its special extended opening hours for assistance with family and social history research and to conduct assisted searches of computerized newspaper back issues.
8. Music, Words and Workshops in Medieval Athenry, Co. Galway
Wonder through the medieval streets of Athenry and discover fairies in the library, a pop up string quartet, see drummers in the market square and music in the heritage centre. Experience a range of free cultural activities for all the family to enjoy; the event will run from 5pm-10pm.
9. Children and Family event by McCormack Puppets at Edenderry Library, Co. Offaly
The McCormack Puppets invites you to join them in a double bill of an Irish take on Beauty & The Beast and the classic story of Punch & Judy. The event will run from 5:30-6:30pm
