A open letter to mums: 'They don’t want anything more'

There are times you want to take a day off from being a mum, or have some ‘me’ time – alone – that means NO children for those of you who don’t get it.

And for those of you who believe you are a bad parent for having these selfish thoughts, stop.

You are not selfish, it is normal.

Bethany Jacobs is a mother who understands it isn’t all sunshine and roses out there.

The mum-of-two wrote a poem addressed to all mums in the world – while sitting at the side of her bath tub, hiding from her children, trying to regain her sanity.

It begins: “To the mum hiding in her bathroom, needing peace for just one minute, as the tears roll down her cheeks…”

“To the mum who is so tired she feels likes she can't function anymore and would do anything to lay down and get the rest she needs…”

The poem is addressed to all mums out there who sometimes feel so overwhelmed, that they actually believe they are a bad parent.

That is not the case at all though, and Bethany makes a pretty good observation.

“This is a phase of life for us. This is a really really hard, challenging, crazy phase of life.”

But the mother also reminds us that in the heat of it, we’re doing just fine: “You are enough. You are important. You are worthy.”

When we're tired, we still have to function. When we're distraught and want to be alone, we sit surrounded. When we aren't hungry, we still have to provide. When we're in the mood to do nothing, we still have to do a lot. When we're overcome with emotion, we still have to offer comfort. When there is a moment where we need for nothing, someone always needs for something. When we're overwhelmed and feel like we can't do anything, we have to take the next step forward anyways. The days we just want to survive, it takes a lot more than it used to. Becoming a parent changes everything. Some days it's for the better and we wouldn't have it any other way and some days we see and feel the struggle for survival, realizing how much we have on our plates at any given moment. Just remember, you are enough. You are always enough.

“Those little eyes that look up at you – they think you are perfect. They think you are more than enough.”

“Those little hands that reach out to hold you – they think you are the strongest. They think you can conquer the world,” adds Bethany.

And she is right.

No one knows your children like you do, as a mother you try your best, and your children know that.

As Bethany concludes: “Those little hearts that reach out to touch yours – they don’t want anything more, they just want you.”

“You. Are. Amazing.”

And we think you are all amazing too.
