Family Life

This family festival in Smithfield sounds like it's going to be an absolute blast

Now in its eighth year, Family Day Festival is presented by One Family, Ireland’s organisation for people parenting alone, sharing parenting, or separating.

This free festival celebrates the diversity of Irish families today with a jam-packed programme of activities including the creation of Ireland’s Biggest Family Tree.

Children will be encouraged to take pride in their family, whatever form it may take, by drawing their family portrait on a leaf template (available from www.familyday.ie).

These leaves will be combined and displayed to create Ireland's Biggest Family Tree.

A magician will be there to add a touch of magic with his blend of tricks and comedy, and children can enjoy games, storytelling, workshops and lots more.

"We created Family Day a decade ago to help raise awareness of how family diversity is a positive thing for society", says One Family CEO, Karen Kiernan.

"We still have a lot of work to do as our Constitution does not yet acknowledge this reality, and many of the families we work with are struggling more than ever.

"But Family Day is one day we can all get together, celebrate all family forms and simply have fun."

One Family founded Family Day, inspired by the UN International Day of Families on 15 May annually, so that all families whatever form they take, have a day that's theirs to celebrate.

Family Day Festival returns on Saturday, 19th May, from 1 to 5pm, in Smithfield Square for a fun-filled day of free family entertainment in the heart of Dublin city.
