The top 10 most popular Halloween costumes for kids this year

Halloween season has finally arrived!

Every year, many parents experience a mad dash to find the perfect costume for their little one to don for their Halloween parties, trick or treating sessions and dress-up days at school.

Sometimes, though, it can feel like an impossible task to know which character your child would most like to dress up as. So, we’ve come up with a handy guide for all of the most popular options!

Below, we have curated a list of 10 of the most popular costumes that you will find amongst kids this Halloween. Some of these have never gone out of fashion for decades, while others have sprung up this year as brand-new favourites.

If your child is struggling to narrow down their costume options, take them through this list and allow them to figure out which one suits them the most:

Barbie

Of course, we have to start out with the biggest box office hit of the year! Greta Gerwig’s movie Barbie took over our lives earlier this year, and so it’s no surprise that it is also dominating Halloween costumes this season. While there are endless Barbie and Ken costumes to choose from, we’re obsessed with the duo’s cowgirl and cowboy looks.

The Little Mermaid

In May of this year, Ariel and Prince Eric came to life on the big screen with the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Now, your little ones can dress up as the beloved Disney couple! While Ariel’s ‘human’ dress is a beautiful costume, we always love opting for her mermaid look, as it’s much more fun for the Halloween festivities.

Wednesday

After its launch last November, Netflix’s Wednesday became the streaming service’s biggest English language show of all time. So, it’s fair to say that one year on from its premiere, Wednesday is still gaining a lot of buzz for Halloween! While your child might want to dress up as Jenna Ortega’s titular character, they also have several other creepy characters to choose from The Addams Family and the hit series.

Taylor Swift

It’s fair to argue that Taylor Swift is the biggest singer in the world right now, which also makes her the perfect person to dress up as for Halloween! If your little one is a huge Swiftie, then they will love having a look through some of her most incredible costumes to gain some inspiration. You can go back as far as you like with her music video catalogue, or you could go with something more recent from her record-breaking Eras Tour.

Super Mario Bros.

Mario, Luigi and the gang have been bringing delight to youngsters for decades now, and their popularity is still growing! Following the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie back in April, the adventurous brothers remain one of the most popular costumes for both young and old this Halloween. If you don’t fancy dressing up as Mario or Luigi, then there are also the likes of Princess Peach, Toad and Donkey Kong to choose from!

Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus fans were thrilled when the long-awaited sequel finally came out last year. So, why not keep the sorcery of the Sanderson sisters alive by offering your little ones a chance to dress up as them? Whether they choose to opt for a Winifred, Sarah or Mary costume, we’re certain they will bring the spooky vibes this Halloween season!

The Hunger Games

With the new prequel movie, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, set for release next month, now is the perfect time for your child to get into their Hunger Games phase! The characters of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are easy to replicate, with their simple outfits in the first Hunger Games. Just don’t forget Katniss’ three trademarks – her braid, her bow and arrow (a prop one, of course), and her Mockingjay pin!

Marvel

The Marvel cinematic universe continues to dominate our TV and film screens each year, which is why they remain some of the most popular Halloween costumes for our kiddies! Luckily, as there are so many characters to choose from nowadays, your little one won’t be stuck for options. Will they be a Captain America or a Spiderman? A Black Widow or a Superwoman? The choice is endless!

Even though the characters of Woody and Buzz are almost 30 years old now, our little ones still love to dress up as them once October rolls around. The best friend duo is such a cute costume choice that never seems to go out of style. Plus, if you have three youngsters in your house, you can complete the team by dressing up as cowgirl Jessie. Giddy up!

Snow White

Last but not least, as Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is due to premiere next March, we think it’s the perfect time for your child to dress up as the wholesome princess! If you have two kids, you can do a wicked pairing of Snow White and the Evil Queen, or if you have lots of youngsters, you can dress them up as a few of the dwarfs.
