Teenager hailed as hero after rescuing elderly woman and baby from fire

What a hero!

A 15-year-old boy has made headlines after running into a house fire to save an elderly lady and a baby.

Jack Wood, from South London, was on his way to school when he noticed smoke coming out of a neighbours house.

Telling his mother to call the fire brigade, he said he "had to save the baby".

Knowing that a baby and elderly woman live in the house in the house his first concern was for their safety.

"I just wanted to get the baby and the gran out and make sure the fire was out," he told local media

"I know the people who live there so I knew that there was a baby inside and that the gran might not be able to get out very quickly, so I ran in, got the baby out first, and then went back in to save the gran."

After ensuring the safety of the one-year-old and the woman he went about into the house to put out the fire- cause by a tumble dryer.

According to mum Emma, helping people is in the young lad's nature.

"He didn't think twice about going in to help. He knew people were in trouble so his first thought was to help them.

"I am really proud of him, especially as he's only 15. The school has allowed him to take the day off because of what he has done today."

A fundraising page for Jack has been set up, aiming to raise money for the boy to get himself “the latest games console, clothes, bike, or whatever it is he is into.”

Aiming to raise £300 for Jack to treat himself, the page has currently raised £1,120 and counting.

“This page is to raise some money for the young lad Jack that rescued a lady and one-year-old baby from a house fire and put it out,” it reads. “Not many 15 year olds would have the bravery to do this and we think that he should be rewarded and also be able to treat himself.”

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade, acknowledged Jack's bravery but stressed that no-one should attempt to copy his actions, unless in extreme circumstances.

What a brave young man!
