Teacher puts into perspective why kids may cry in school, and we're tearing up

Mum-of-two, Kara Lawler, is the force behind Mothering the Divide

The Pennsylvanian mum has been divulging her thoughts through her writing for a number of years, and this week she has revealed something which will bring solace to many parents.

Kara's daughter, Maggie, has been struggling with the back-to-school process, it has been a source of discomfort for some time.

Kara writes: "She's so fun-loving and friendly, so this has been a surprise for us. Her school is wonderful, her teacher is great, and she loves the other kids. But she cries every morning."

"She's very verbal and despite my best attempts to figure out what's going on, she simply says she misses me. And I do believe that's all it is."

But as a mum, it didn't stop Kara worrying; worrying about what she can do to help Maggie adjust a little easier.

"After about a minute she is fine until she sees her brother at lunch time in passing, […], and then the crying begins again. We all just think she's homesick and seeing Matt reminds her again of not being at home with us."

"I texted Matt's preschool teacher about this because he never did it and she wonders if Maggie simply loves home so much that there's no where else she'd rather be."

"And while that's kind of heartbreaking because she does need to spend time away from me, I loved the way she framed it. It helped me."

Consistently reading stories about abandoned children and neglect brings Kara nothing but sadness, however, the way this teacher spoke about Maggie's tears brought the mum-of-two comfort.

"All around me I hear stories of tears at drop-off. […] None of this is all that uncommon at all despite what people might tell you. I'm here to help you re-frame the tears at drop off to daycare, preschool, school, college: Your children love home so much."

"And that's not a bad thing. How blessed are we to have created homes they love so very much. Truly. What an honour. And how lucky are our children. And some of them cry because of it," added Kara.

Because she knows as much as us, that it's not easy to leave your entire world behind at those gates, having to disappear while the tears flow, sharing her message so that when our children cry, parents with heavy hearts can remember it's because your kids love and miss you.

Beautiful words shared – we hope you can take comfort in this too mums.
