Six-year-old raises over $13,000 for separated immigrant families

The kindness of children is truly a sight to behold.

Shannon Cofrin Gaggero was having an open conversation with her children about the Trump policy of separating immigrant children from their families at the US-Mexico. Upset by what was going on, her six-year-old daughter decided she wanted to help the families- by opening a lemonade stall.

“When I told our kids about children being separated from their parents at our borders, they were understandably upset,” Gaggero wrote in a Facebook post. “Our six-year-old came up with the idea to host a lemonade stand to raise money in support of those working hard to push back against this inhumane practice.”

They originally hoped to raise $1,000 for family reunification charities, but that changed when their fundraising page went viral. They smashed their target within days, raising $13,000.

The proceeds are being given to  Refugee and Immigrant Centre for Education and Legal Service, or RAICES, a Texas non-profit that is offering free or low-cost legal services for immigrants.

Thanks to Trump's zero tolerance boarder policies, it is estimated that 2,300 children have been separated from their parents after illegally crossing the boarder. Adult family members were detained as criminals while seeking asylum.

RAICES has been among those groups went viral thanks to online fundraising, recently receiving $20m from a viral Facebook fundraiser.

Sometimes all it takes in the selflessness of a six-year-old to remind us that we're all human.
