Nose picking: how to deal with it
A lot of mums think that nose picking is a ‘nervous habit’ like nail biting and teeth grinding. But, when a child picks their nose, it doesn’t always mean that he or she is nervous. Most likely, they are simply bored and looking for a way to pass the time.
There are certain things that make a child more likely to pick their nose. For instance, a kid with an allergy will engage in nose picking a lot more than a child with none. This is because the heavy flow of mucus to their nose leaves crusting around the nostrils and ultimately, something to pick on.
Luckily, nose picking is a habit that is easier to break than others. Most children break the habit on their own, while teasing from friends forces others to stop. Either way, it won’t last forever.
Here’s what you can do in the meantime:
Say nothing
Regardless of how off putting it is and how uncomfortable it makes people feel. The last thing you want to do is constantly nag at your child for picking their nose. A lot of the time they don’t even realise they’re doing it. Punishing them for doing what they think is a harmless act won’t do you or your child any good. If anything, it will give them the urge to keep on doing it.
Keep ‘em busy
If you’re aware of the times and places your child is most likely to pick, try giving them something to play with before they start. When a child is too busy trying to put the pieces together of a puzzle or turning the pages of their favorite book, they won’t have time to think about picking their nose – even if they do it subconsciously.
Be hopeful
As your child ages, he or she will begin to engage in complex activites where they will be required to use their hands. This means they will naturally break the habit on their own. If your little one still picks their nose while in the crèche, chances are, remarks from other kids will help them stop.
If your child’s nose picking habit has gotten to the stage where he or she draws blood from their nose, then you should consult a doctor. Other than that, just give it time.
