Nappy rash is common in babies... but do you know what causes it?
Nappy rash is a pretty common occurrence in newborns and even in older babies, especially during teething.
It can be sore, red and even pimply, and is really, really uncomfortable for your little one.
However, while many of us are quick to spot the signs (irritable baby and red bum), only a few of us mums really know why it occurs.
And that’s where we come in.
So, what actually causes it?
Well, there are numerous reasons why your little one has a sore bum, but the following are the most common:
- Being left in a wet or dirty nappy for too long
- Wearing a nappy that is too small for them
- An allergic reaction to the material in the nappy
- It could also be because of certain antibiotics that they or you (if you are breastfeeding) are taking
How can you treat it?
A nappy rash can affect all the delicate skin around your baby’s bottom and inner thighs, and may be particularly bad in folds and creases. Apart from being sore, if left untreated, it may develop into a bacterial or yeast infection, so it is important you take action as soon as you spot it.
- Use a protective cream such as Caldease which can soothe the infected area and create a barrier between the nappy and your baby’s skin
- Alternatively, Caldesene Powder’s medicated formula attacks harmful bacteria, soothes skin irritation (which helps prevent rashes), and also forms a barrier against wetness on your baby’s skin
- You should also let them enjoy a few minutes of nappy-free time as often as you can, change them frequently, avoid rubbing the sore area when cleaning them, and make sure they are thoroughly dry before putting their nappy back on
And remember to contact your GP if you are concerned in any way.
