My Name Tag research: 83% of Irish grandparents assist with grandchild care
Grandparents’ Day 2023, when we celebrate and honour our grandparents, takes place this Friday 6th October 2023 and to coincide with the special day, My Nametags carried out a survey with Irish adults to find out a bit more about grandparents in Ireland today.
Childcare
The survey explored how much grandparents nowadays assist with childcare for their grandchildren with 8 out of 10 Irish adults revealing that their parents offer them help with childcare either very often (46%) or once in a while (37%). Interestingly, when asked if they paid their parents for their childcare support only 23% of those surveyed stated that they did. 57% of those surveyed also stated that their children had sleepovers in the parents homes giving them a night off childcare duties!
Names & nicknames for grandparents
The survey also looked into what Irish grandchildren call their grandparents. Not surprisingly, Nana came out on top for our grandmothers (with 54%), followed closely by Granny (42%). When it comes to nicknames, 23% of those surveyed revealed that their children have a nickname for a grandparent with some Grandads across the country being addressed by some quirky names including ‘Gra Gra’, ‘Grangan’ and ‘Bam Bam’.
Speaking about the survey findings, Lars B. Andersen, Founder and Managing Director, My Nametags, commented, “At My Nametags we love discovering the fun nicknames that children have their grandparents and it is clear to see from the findings that Irish grandparents play a very important role in the lives of their grandchildren with a whopping 83% assisting with childcare. All the team at My Nametags would like to wish grandparents across Ireland a very happy Grandparents’ Day!”
