'Mummy's boy': Why the mother-son bond is so much more than that
There is a quote about the mother-son relationship that simply sums up what it's all about:
''Men are what their mothers made them.''
We definitely agree, Ralph Waldo Emerson.
The trope of ''Mummy's boy'' has long been depicted in popular culture as the standard mother-son bond.
However, mummy blogger Nikki Penninngtons Facebook post has captured the real trials and tribulations in the everyday life of a boy mum.
While she speaks of how ''you will be able to name every single dinosaur and you will be so proud when your son can do the same thing,'' she also touches on the uncertainty that comes with the role.
She says that, ''you will cry sometimes in your car and question if you are doing this whole boy mom thing right.''
The pure joy of being a mum to your little boy also comes with a huge responsibility.
''You will try and find the balance to teach them to be strong and brave but also find yourself telling them they can be sensitive and kind and both at the same time.''
The mother and son bond is without a doubt a special one, but what exactly makes it so?
Dr. Pasco Fearon from the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences, University of Reading says, “children with insecure attachments to their mothers, particularly boys, had significantly more behavioural problems, even when the behavioural problems were measured years later.”
A HuffPost article focused on the mothers-of-boys-only. It reiterates that as their mother, you are their first example of a woman and their first experience of love.
''They learn how to love women – and how to be loved by women – from you.''
Pennington is aware that one day her sons will fly the nest and the inevitable heartbreak that will come with that.
''You will know the heartache in raising them to one day leave you but you will do it anyway.''
This is the risk that every mother makes when they take home their baby boy from the hospital. But the pure joy that awaits makes it all worth it, right?
Whether you're a mum who has just had her first baby boy, or you're trucking along in the midst of the toddler/young child years, hold on tight…the sweetest journey is still to come.
Enjoy every second.
''Let France have good mothers, and she will have good sons,'' Napoleon Bonaparte once said. We think he was on the money, don't you?
