Mum won't teach her son how to read, as he'll go to the classroom with much more

Crystal Lowery is not teaching her five-year-old son how to read.

While it sounds controversial, this mum has an understanding of what she would like her son to know before he joins a classroom environment and insists: "He's busy learning other things."

"Don't get me wrong, we read him books all the time. We've imagined ourselves in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, and we're 170 pages into Harry Potter's Chamber of Secrets. We're teaching him to enjoy stories, to get lost in characters."

The mum-of-two explains her main goal is to teach her son important aspects of being a child, for instance; being a good sport, learning how to build, how to exercise, how to take care of his things, to be creative, how to apologise and how to forgive.

And most importantly: "He's learning that the key to happiness is to focus on his blessings rather than complaining about what he doesn't have," added the mum.

"He's learning important lessons every day. But he's not learning how to read."

Crystal does understand that while he will be heading along to preschool unable to read, he'll have many attributes which he can contribute to the classroom.

"The ability to try new things without getting frustrated. The ability to make friends, even though friendship can be a messy business. The ability to listen to others and follow instructions."

"The ability to problem-solve. The ability to concentrate on a task."

Crystal is a firm believer that there is so much out there that our children can learn, and those things won't be measured by a standardised test.

She understands that there will be days when her tot's hours will be filled with 'phonics, penmanship, and fractions', however this mum isn't worried about that right now.

Crystal feels her son's days are better filled with learning these important aspects of life at this point in his young life.

How do you feel mums? Should we take Crystal's comments on board?
