Mum stuck in blizzard saved by stranger's life-saving act of kindness
Nearly a decade ago, Liz Petrone, from New York, was in the hospital with her first baby.
Due to health complications, her son had undergone multiple surgeries.
While discharging them from the hospital, the staff expressed their concern that the family might have difficulty getting home as a blizzard whirled outside.
But Patrone insisted on leaving, they were exhausted from an emotional day, and only lived a short drive away.
They piled into their four-wheel drive, crawling through the snow.
But, unfortunately, the car got stuck going up a hill. For Patrone it was enough to bring her to breaking point:
"That? That WAS too much. My baby was all stitched up and bundled up in the back seat of our car and my heart hurt from aching all day, and I couldn't see because of the snow, so I got out of the car and walked the nearby streets."
Trudging through the snow, she saw it "shining like a beacon through the blanket of white", a snowplough:
Racing up to the plough, arms waving, she noticed the window being rolled down.
Luckily, Patrone said, the driver was a woman who listen patiently to her tale of woe:
"So, I told her my sob-story, sobbing, and begged her to please, please, plough us a path to our house, so we could get our bandaged up baby into his warm bed, and start the process of healing."
They followed the plough home to safety, grateful to the kind driver:
"We followed her taillights across the streets and up the hill and eventually, into our driveway, where she drove off into the white.
We climbed out and into our house and for a second, in the snow, all was right with the world."
Petrone wanted to share her story to remind us of two things:
"One, to remind you that there are real people (heroes) out there busting butt, so we can be safe and get home.
Two, to remind you that sometimes to get home, we need to ask for help."
