Meet the first baby in the world to have three biological parents
The world's first three-parent baby has been born using a new and revolutionary technique that combines the genes of three parents.
The infant boy carries DNA from both of his parents, but also carries a very small piece of genetic code from a donor.
The mother of the baby is the carrier of a genetic disorder that could have been fatal to the child.
This is a procedure that has only been approved in the UK.
However, the baby in question was engineered in Mexico where there is no legislation to stop this sort of genetic alteration.
The method is called a spindle nuclear transfer, where the nucleus from one of the mother’s egg is inserted into a donor egg that had it's own nucleus removed.
Dr John Zhang, the head doctor on the medical team told the MailOnline that "this is a milestone technique."
The parents of this miracle baby had already lost two children to a genetic disorder, and did not want to go through it again.
The baby is now 5-months-old, and perfectly healthy.
