Library shocked when son returns his mum's library book 84 years later
The year was 1934 and an avid reader was making her weekly library trip.
At just 11-years-old, the young girl always had an affinity for literature, reading as often as she could.
She decided to check out Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, a collection of poems allegedly written by dead residents of a fictional town.
And although she was usually responsible, the girl forgot to return her library book after this trip.
Fast forward 84 years later…
Her son is cleaning out her home and getting her belongings in order when he discovers something he has never seen before.
Covered in a thick layer of dust, he wipes away years of grime to reveal the title of this ancient book.
He immediately feels a connection with his mum, remembering her endearing hobby as a smile spreads over his face.
Opening up to the first page, he discovers a small library log, stating that the book belongs to Shreve Memorial Library.
He immediately takes it upon himself to return the collection, completing the long forgotten task for his mother.
The library’s assistant manager, Jackie Morales is shocked when he hands over the classic book after all these years.
Sharing on Facebook, the library said: “Better late than never, right? We had a patron return a book to our Main Branch yesterday that his mother checked out in 1934 when she was 11 years old.
“That means the book is only 84 years overdue! The book is Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters.”
Recognising the rarity of the situation and grateful for the vintage book’s return, Jackie waved the late fee for the man.
She laughed and commented that “it is never too late to return your library books”, reported The Independent.
The library was filled with gratitude for the kind gesture, and the mum would be proud of her son’s responsible act.
