Inspirational... Couple buy a farm after they learn their adopted son has FAS
Rob and Reece were told many years ago that they would never have children.
However, the couple believe you should ‘never say never’; and in a wonderful twist of fate, within three months they were fathers-of-four.
The inspirational Maryland couple, who have been married for seven years, always knew they wanted to be dads so they decided they would foster.
Only wanting one child, they got a phone call to care for a brother and sister, so without hesitation Rob and Reece took both of them in, not wanting to separate them.
Rob shares: “Within three months we got another call, for a six-month-old and a two-year-old.”
“And the next thing you know, we went from two guys to six people.”
“They don’t care the fact that we’re white or we’re gay, they care the fact that we love them,” added the dad.
But it wasn’t so simple, there was a lot of transitioning as the fathers tells us their children were hiding food in fear of not eating, and their new son had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome which meant he couldn’t walk or talk.
However, their fatherly instinct kicked in right away; researching their son’s condition the dads found that children with FAS react well to being around animals and eating organically.
So the dads bought a farm, complete with chickens, goats, birds, dogs… you name it, and now Rob tells us:
“We were told he would never walk or talk, and now three years later, he is not only running, walking and laughing, but he’s loving.”
But what stuck out the most for Rob when the children arrived at their doorstep were their black bags.
Each child came with a black bin bag with their possessions inside, half filled with worn and tattered clothing, bringing back memories for Rob of his time in the foster-care system.
The bags prompted Rob to set up Comfort Cases, which aim to give proper backpacks to children in foster care, with belongings such as soap, a toothbrush, a blanket, pyjamas, books and a cuddly toy inside.
The mission of the non-profit organisation states: "We believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity. Every child deserves to pack their belongings in a special bag that they can call their own."
This is one incredible story of love and determination; what the couple done for their son and the journey they have begun for foster children across the world is amazing.
