'I took a stand': 83-year-old man fights off three men who try and rob a bookies
Age is just a number, as the saying goes, and this gentleman took those words seriously earlier this week.
An 83-year-old man is being deservedly hailed as a hero after he fought off not one but three thieves as they attempted to rob a bookmakers.
Denis O’Connor was at Bar One Racing in Glanmire, County Cork when three men clad in balaclavas burst into the shop.
To make matters even more terrifying, two of them were holding hammers and one had a gun.
The Irish great-grandfather was not intimidated and quickly rushed to the aid of the cashier.
“You can either run and hide or take a stand and I took a stand. The two with the hammers had jumped in and were threatening Tim, the manager, and I decided to go and help him,” Denis said.
“Tim the manager is a very nice young man and I just couldn't not help him. I ignored the fellow with the gun and I went behind the counter.''

The video of Denis saving the day has been uploaded to Facebook and people are commenting on how fantastic his actions are.
He continued, ''sometimes you can just sit down and do nothing or you can stand up to people like these and that’s what I did.''
The retired mechanic-fitter and father of five can be seen in the video grabbing the assailants and pulling them from behind the counter before he forces them out of the building.
Well done Denis, you're an inspiration to us all!
