Here’s how your kid can become an Eco Explorer at Dublin Zoo

As parents, it is our job to teach our children all about the importance of sustainability.

Recycling, reusing and conserving are the things we need to do in order to safe-guard the planet for future generations.

And the younger the habit is instilled in kids the easier and better for all.

Children learn more by doing, so make sure you are setting a good example at home. Placing a recycling bin in the kitchen with a list of items that can and cannot go into it, a compost bin in the garden for all the food waste and timing showers are all ways to show your kids how to save energy and reuse.

But that’s not all you can do. In fact, a little trip to Dublin Zoo will show your kids other ways to be sustainable.

With the help of their sustainability partner, SSE Airtricity, Dublin Zoo has created their very own SSE Airtricity Eco Explorer Trail, which teaches kids all about recycling, conserving water and biodiversity.

Involving a number of stations all around the zoo, the SSE Airtricity Eco Explorer Trail includes some great ‘Did you know?’ facts.

For instance, did you know that Dublin Zoo harvests rainwater from the roofs of several of its buildings and uses this to flush some of its public toilets?

No? Neither did we!

The SSE Airtricity Eco Explorer Trail also encourages kids to connect with nature, to harvest rainwater and to reduce the amount of plastic.

And becoming an explorer is really easy.

Simply download the SSE Airtricity Eco Explorers app on Android and iPhone before you start your journey around the zoo.

Here you will find a map of all Eco stations, a backpack and a list of tasks. When you reach a station, you’ll receive a message to complete a task.

Every time you complete a task you’ll receive an Eco Explorer badge.

Once you have completed all nine stations you’ll be a fully fledged Eco Explorer!
