Rude! Mum shocked after gift she bought son's friend is REJECTED
Buying a birthday present for a child you barely know is tricky.
You don't want to get something too old for them for fear of the scathing looks from their mother nor do you don't want to get anything too young for fear of being labelled uncool…
So to keep things simple, most of us will give the birthday boy or girl a book.
Everyone loves a good book… right?
WRONG.
Like Liz Dashwood who got it so wrong that the gift she bought her son's friend was rejected.
Like actually rejected.
Handed back by his mum with an "anything else will be fine" comment attached.
Yup.
Writing in The Pool in a piece entitled The politics of gift-giving to six-year-olds, Liz recalled how she was left shocked (as you would) when the book she bought for birthday boy Marco was handed back.
“She took it in one hand and gave it back to me in the other, saying, ‘Marco doesn’t really like books – anything else would be fine.’ And sort of gestured in the general direction of the shops,” wrote Liz.
Just like any normal person would be, Liz was left completely shocked by the rude gesture:
“There was the not-just-accepting-a-present-any-present-with-grace-and-a-thank-you.
"There was the pandering to the child – he doesn’t like books? So what? He only gets presents he likes? His world is going to be destroyed if he doesn’t get 30-out-of-30 bullseyes?” she mused.
And she's right.
Completely, absolutely, 100 percent right.
No matter how much you may not like a present, you never, EVER give it back. Like ever.
Has this mother never heard of re-gifting?
