Bring 'em BACK! The 10 retro ice-creams that (i)scream an Irish childhood
Call us nostalgic old fools, but the ice-cream landscape isn’t what it once was. We’re talking the ice-pops of yore, the ones that characterised our childhoods and smeared our happy faces with sticky sheens of pinks and greens.
Every summer without fail we have a hankering for the ice-creams of our childhoods (as our eye-rolling kids know only too well when we say, “We had better ice-creams in MY day”)
Well we’re not giving up the fight – here are 10 treats we’re pleading the ice-cream gods will bring back:
1. Fat frogs
These were apple-tastic and so refreshing on a hot summer’s day (we had plenty of those too when we were kids) – and was it just us but did the curves of the froggy shape make them more comfortable to lick? Ergonomic we believe they call that. See, ahead of their time.
2. Sparkles
These were so cooling on a hot day – and so tasty. And do you remember the excitement when they did the split flavour ones like half strawberry half pear? And of course the price was a plus too, especially when you were trying to make 50p last a week.
3. Cool Bits
Do you remember these? They came in a packets and were little ice cream shapes in different flavours covered in colourdey chocolate. Delicious.
4. Freaky Foots
We know these are been resurrected as Funny Foots but we’re talking the ones of old that had tangy strawberry sauce swirled around the rich vanilla ice-cream. Why take such beauty from this world?
5. Jumbo
Because sometimes you just want a big slab of ice-cream. The Jumbo was just that, a lovely weighty bar of ice-creamy, biscuity goodness.
6. Vanilla Tub
What happened to the little Vanilla Tubs? Creamy and delicious in their simplicity, they always went down a treat. Plus they were handy for little ones too – and by handy of course we mean easy for us to steal.
7. Super Mario
These weren’t around for too long, but just long enough to get us hooked. They were in the shape of Mario’s face – hair and moustache was chocolate, face was vanilla and hat and nose was strawberry.
8. Sky Bar
Nowadays when people say ‘Sky Bar’, they’re talking about some swanky cocktail watering hole overlooking a lit up cityscape. When we say Sky Bar we mean the chocolate covered ices with some Wispa-esque bubbliness going on in the centre.
9. JR
We know who shot JR, but we have no idea who decided to discontinue these babies.
10. Golly Bar
The bar was discontinued and thankfully re-imagined in decidedly less offensive fashion, but it's never tasted the same. Golly Bars of old had that slow-melting creaminess that slid down the throat like velvet.
What ice-cream would YOU pay good money to have brought back? We'd love to hear from you!
