Brave dad battles severe stutter by READING to his daughter
A dad – who has a stutter – has won the hearts of people all over the world after posting a video of himself reading Aladdin to his daughter at bedtime.
Lance Lambert, a US army veteran, might have served two tours in Iraq, but what he finds most terrifying is reading to his 6-year old daughter Avery.
Lance posted the video – which is over 11 minutes long – to show how hard it can be for people living with a stutter.
“Someone had mentioned that my speech wasn’t that bad,” he said. “I made a comment that I can’t even read my daughter’s bedtime story without having issues. So I posted the video and said, ‘See. This is why I have to read better.’”
In the heart-melting video, Lance slowly reads the story to Avery – who even chips in to help him when he’s having a bit of difficulty.
“My daughter doesn't care at all. It's me who cares,” he told TODAY. “I’ve said to her, ‘I’m sorry you have a dad that stutters, and she replied, ‘I don’t care dad, it’s fine. And I started crying – and I don’t cry!”
Lance, who has had the stutter all his life, has been in speech therapy since he was a child. However it never “cured” him, he says, and he has himself learned ways to control and work around his speech issues.
“The response was overwhelming from my friends and family, so I put it on YouTube, because I thought it would relate to other people who stutter,” he said.
We think that sharing a video showing himself at his most vulnerable was such a brave move – and we commend him for his courage.
