'Brave and beautiful': Campaign launched to help mum-of-five fight cancer diagnosis
A campaign has been launched to help a mum-of-five who is battling cancer get treatment at a facility in Budapest this month.
Kelly Caffrey from Sheriff Street in North Dublin was diagnosed with cancer in February, and her friends and family are doing everything they can to ensure that Kelly has enough funds raised to go abroad for treatment, which could help her diagnosis, which is at an advanced, aggressive stage.
This includes a Go Fund Me campaign and a number of events being set up by the local community to get as much raised as possible so that the 41-year-old can avail of the programme, which takes place mid-July. The mother of five beautiful daughters, whose eldest is just one – and most recently, a grandmother to twins – aims to travel to the Gerson Institute in Budapest for potentially life-altering treatment. The clinic has a spot available for Kelly from July 16-29. However, with such a short window, money needs to be raised as soon as possible to secure this place.
They are halfway towards reaching their goal, thanks to the incredible outpouring of support that has been shown to Kelly and her wonderful family and want to do everything they can to raise the rest.
There's quite a bit to go yet before Kelly's trip can be secured.
Beverley, a close friend of the family who set up the Go Fund Me campaign, said that Kelly was a light in people's lives who was prepared to do whatever she could to fight her diagnosis and be there for her five children and her grandchildren.
"Kelly has always been the life and soul of every party; she's incredible," Beverly said. "The diagnosis was very hard for us to come to terms with initially but now we're just focused, as Kelly is, on doing everything we can to get her as much treatment as possible."
She praised the "brave and beautiful" mum for her positivity and strength and said they were determined to everything they could.
"Her heart knows no bounds; she's a woman who will do everything she can to show her kids how to be strong. Kelly has faced many setbacks in life, but for every step, she was knocked back she soldiered on, two steps forward paving the way and showing her wonderful daughters that anything is possible. "
"Kelly is loved beyond compare in our community and I need for us all to stand together and help fight this fight with her."
Beverley added the local community "had been amazing" in coming together to organise fundraisers and help and support Kelly and her family.
"Kelly is brave; she is beautiful – she can do this."
