This mum has found an AMAZING way to empower her daughter
A devoted mum has created a unique set of napkin art to go with her daughter's lunch, to inspire her throughout her day and into her future.
Driven by the dread of Trump’s inauguration, and daily reminders that sexism is still alive and well in American and global culture; Meaghan Elderkin, from Rhode Island, wanted her daughter to feel empowered, not demoralised.
The feminist napkin series included quotes from influential female leaders in their fields, such as Hillary Clinton, Meryl Streep, Susan B. Anthony, Agatha Christie, Edith Wharton and Tarajii P. Henson.
According to the Huffington Post, the art derives from a family tradition from when Meaghan was a child, which she continued when her daughter started preschool.
Nine-year-old Holden’s lunchbox art usually contained “dinosaurs, bad puns and ‘mom jokes'”, she told the publication; however, following Trump’s win, she decided to switch things up.
The photos, originally published to the Pantsuit Nation Facebook group, received over 22,000 likes.
Meaghan said: “I was really inspired by the women posting in Pantsuit Nation, and I wanted to let them know that I was trying to do my part.”
“I really wasn’t expecting the overwhelming response. They seem to really resonate with people.”
Moved by Obama’s farewell speech, the talented mum said of her latest piece: “I'm especially inspired by the people who are leading the change we wish to see.”
1. 'Be courageous'
2. 'Be optimistic'
3. 'Have faith and believe in good'
4. 'Keep hoping'
5. 'Reject darkness'
6. 'Be brave'
7. 'Diversity matters, be inclusive'
8. 'Keep dreaming'
“I felt really small and powerless after the results of the election. I wanted to remind my daughter (and myself, I guess) that we’re still strong and powerful even when we’re afraid. A lot of strong women have come before us, and they’ve had to fight even scarier obstacles," said Meaghan.
