Adorable video of sister singing to special needs brother is melting our hearts
When Amanda Bowman Grey jumped in the shower, she asked her teenage daughter, Lydia, to look after her two-year-old brother for a bit.
Little Bo has Down's syndrome and has a 12 word vocabulary, all of which he learned through singing.
So when Amanda stumbled out of the bathroom and saw Lydia playing the guitar and singing to her brother, she know she had to tape the sweet moment.
And we're so glad she did. Singing You are my Sunshine with Bo, it really captures a special sibling bond.
Sharing the video to Love What Matters, their mum wrote:
"If she didn't have a guitar I don’t know if she would know how to babysit him. This is her go to."
According to Amanda, Bo's response to the guitar shows that music therapy works:
"It’s proof that music therapy works. Bo is 25 months old and has a 12 word vocabulary. Every word he has learned has been through music and singing."
According to The Today Show, Amanda and her husband are both musicians, and music is an important part of their household.
Since going viral this week, Amanda has reposted videos of herself singing to little Bo, while he was recovering from heart surgery.
Accompanying the video with the backstory, Amanda explained that after Bo's heart surgery "it ended up going downhill really fast really bad".
Spending months in the silent ICU, the parents were granted special permission to sing to their baby son. They hoped that the music would "comfort him as they [ICU staff] believed that he could still hear us even though he couldn't physically respond. He was touch and go at this point."
It was the first time that Bo moved after surgery, was reacting to the music.
"This was the first time that he moved as he reacted to the familiarity of the song and our voices. He was so heavily sedated and wouldn't respond. From then on this has become his theme song."
Bo's recovery was so miraculous that he was studied internationally.
"By the way the blessing that has come out of this besides the fact that he survived after crashing in the CICU was that he is on two international studies for life because he should’ve never survived what his little body had gone through.
He mind boggled our doctors and surgeons as they had to reach out internationally for help and in the end ended up trying their own solution which is why he is here with us today!"
The family are firm believers in music therapy, and for this little ray of sunshine at least, music has proved life saving.
