Toddlers

A stranger at a store called this mum’s child repulsing... and her reply is PERFECTION

We so often see mums post about some awful encounters they have with strangers who feel they know what’s best for your child.

And most of the time, Mum is the dignified person who takes it on the chin, explaining their situation.

But when this mum had an unfortunate experience with a woman while out shopping, she took to Facebook to educate.

And we think she done a pretty good job of it too.

Dallas Lynn’s two-year-old son Jameus suffers from Hirschsprungs disease, a rare condition where his colon did not fully form.

Because of this the toddler has two stomas and bags which aid in his day-to-day care, something which is shared by over 500K Americans.

Nonetheless it didn’t stop a stranger in the shop from being incredibly rude.

When Dallas’ son wanted to be in her arms she naturally picked him up, but as she did the woman in line behind her shrieked at the counter spotting the stomas and bags, saying:

“Why in the world would you let someone do that to him?”

Slightly annoyed but remaining calm, Dallas informed the lady her son needs the stomas and bags as his colon did not fully develop, to which the lady replied:

“Well I am sorry but I just think that is so 'repulsing', can you please keep his shirt down?”

Now, we reckon this is where we would have lost the plot, but Dallas is a little stronger than us.

The super mum went on to educate the internet on Hirschsprungs disease and to remind the world that her son is far from repulsing:

"A stoma is a surgically created opening that allows the body to expel waste. Both of my sons are from his colon, but stomas can be from your ileum (small intestine), or bladder. Was this the first choice of a life I would have chosen for my son? Absolutely not. But this was his only shot at life."

Adding: "His stoma saved his life. There is a very good chance he will have these for the rest of his life and if he does, it will be my job to teach him a positive body image. (As its all parents jobs to do that). It will be my job to teach him to love himself, and his bags."

Dallas though explains to us what the stranger in the store could not possibly comprehend: "See what that woman doesn't understand is, when my son is healthy, he is no different than any other two-year-old. He runs, plays, swims and goes to daycare. When he's healthy, you wouldn't be able to look at him and know he's had over 20 surgeries and procedures."

"You wouldn't know he gets painful home dilation and irrigation treatments twice a day every day. You wouldn't know that every day a catheter is put into his stoma to 'feed' it's stool twice a day in the hopes of growing his colon. He's my heart."

And we can't thank this mum enough for sharing her story and educating the world – Dallas signed off: "Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about, and my son is winning his."

Go Dallas and Jameus, what a team! You know what they say, if you have nothing good to say…
