7 reasons why bread is the absolute best (including white bread)
Bread has been the talk of the nation since Storm Emma hit and everyone panic-bought more loaves than they could fit in their freezer.
Sure it wouldn't be a snow day with a few slices of buttery toast would it?
And that's not the only good thing about bread… it's actually pretty good for us as well:
1. Naturally low in fat and sugar
Both brown and white bread provide just 1% of fat in the Irish diet.
2. Important source of fibre
White bread contributes 19% of the fibre content of a child's diet and 9% of an adult's diet.
3. Contains iron and calcium
Bread contains more iron than a meat or fish dish and is the 2nd largest contributor of calcium in the Irish diet after dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt.
4. Provides protein and other key nutrients and vitamins
Bread provides 10% protein in the Irish diet as well as a number of B2 vitamins such as folic acid.
5. Does not cause weight-gain or bloating
There is no scientific evidence that eating bread causes weight-gain, bloating or digestive problems.
6. Source of carbohydrates
It is recommended that 1/3 of all Irish diets are made up of carbohydrates such as bread, rice and pasta.
7. White bread is a source of fibre, calcium and iron
Those who eat larger amounts of white bread are found to have increased energy levels than those who eat little or no bread.
Irish Pride are launching their new ‘Hi-Fibre Plus Pink Loaf’, a delicious white and wholemeal bread enriched with important vitamins and minerals such as fibre, calcium, protein, folic acid, vitamin C and D as well as being naturally low in sugar and fat.
For every ‘Hi-Fibre Plus’ pink loaf sold, Irish Pride will make a donation to the Marie Keating Foundation.
