5 traditions to start with your family during the Halloween season

If there’s one thing we love to do with our family, it’s making fun new traditions. Whether it’s Christmas, Easter or Halloween, we love making special memories for each celebration to look back on in years to come.

Trying to come up with fresh ideas to introduce to your family may seem like a difficult task, but with Halloween right around the corner, we’re here to help.

While pumpkin carving and trick-or-treating are traditions we love to do again and again, we’re sharing 5 other ideas you may want to start doing with your little ones and continue to do as they get older.

Check out our ideas below and prepare to have frightfully fun times with your family this spooky season and for all the spooky seasons to come!

Joint family costumes

When you have multiple children at home, there’s normally a random mix of costumes you have to get sorted ahead of the big day. But, why not try to organise a joint family costume so everybody can match! This fun tradition creates a great opportunity for a photoshoot and will be a surefire way of having funny memories to look back on. Some of our favourite family costume ideas include characters from The Addams Family, Toy Story, The Flintstones, Ghostbusters, Scooby-Doo and Peter Pan.

Halloween countdown calendar

Whether you start it from the beginning of October or two weeks before Halloween, creating a homemade countdown calendar to the big day can be a super fun way to add even more excitement to the spooky festivities. Usually more common at Christmas time, paper chains are a simple yet effective way to count down the days until your little ones get to go trick-or-treating. Use strips of black and orange paper stapled together to form a link and tear off a piece each day.

Spooky Halloween dinner

There are plenty of Halloween-related recipes you can follow to prepare a scarily tasty meal with your family. These cauldron soup, eyeball pasta, ghost meringue and Dracula’s juice recipes will go down a treat! Enjoy the spooky dinner on the night before Halloween so your little ones’ tummies aren’t too full of sweets and chocolate after trick-or-treating on the day of Halloween itself.

Scary story competition

Scary stories aren’t only fun by the campfire or at sleepovers! One evening, give your children time to think of their own spooky story and get each family member to tell their terrifying tale to the rest of the group. Younger children may even want to create a comic book-style story complete with hand drawn pictures. The winner of the scariest story wins a sweet treat.

Halloween movie night

While we all like to watch a film now and again, it’s hard to find the time to get the whole family to sit down and watch a movie together. But, if you make this tradition into an at-home cinema night, we’re sure it’ll feel extra special for everyone. Make a blanket fort, collect plenty of snacks and settle into a full day of Halloween movies.
