Family Life

10 family films for Valentine's Day that kids will LOVE!

Break out the tissues and get ready to share some of our favourite coming-of-age romance movies with your little ones. And fear not, there isn’t a risqué scene in the mix…

Wall-E

This Pixar classic has it all: romance, humour, a fab story and an important lesson on climate change to boot! The titular character is a curious little robot who lives in a distant future when trash covers the globe and people have to live on a giant spaceship. When Wall-E falls for the sophisticated robot Eve, the pair set about saving the world and bringing the human race back to Earth.

The Parent Trap

While you might enjoy the 1961 original, we suspect your little ones will prefer the modern remake starring child star-turned-train wreck Lindsay Lohan. Halle (Lohan) is stunned when she meets look-a-like Annie (also Lohan) at summer camp. When the girls realise they’re actually twins – each raised by one parent on opposite sides of the globe – they set about getting their parents back together…by swapping places!

The Princess Bride

Buttercup thinks that she will never see her beloved Westley again after his ship is captured by the Dread Pirate Roberts. When Westley returns, the couple must conquer an evil prince, a dangerous Fire Swamp and even death before they can finally be reunited. Trust us, you’ll love it!

You’ve Got Mail

Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks star in this New York-set cyber romance which, thanks to the rise of online dating, is still pretty relevant today! When Kathleen Kelly (Ryan) meets Joe Fox (Hanks) in an internet chatroom, she thinks she might have found her Mr Right…but she’s unaware that Joe owns Fox Books, ready to open right around the corner from her quaint kids’ bookstore, ruining everything she holds dear…

Lady and the Tramp

Lady is a well-bred cocker spaniel who falls for Tramp, a charming mutt from the wrong side of the tracks. But in true Hollywood-style, he wins her over by introducing her to excitement and adventure. A timeless classic, this flick still delights families with its fabulous love story. Of course, it’s that famous spaghetti scene that really warms our hearts…

Shrek

This is romantic-comedy Pixar-style. Princess Fiona is cursed to be a beauty by day and an ogress by night. When she falls in love with ogre Shrek, the curse is broken, but Fiona is surprised to find that her true form is not what she had expected. Kids will learn that real beauty is more than skin-deep from this comic parody of classic fairytales.

Enchanted

Giselle (Amy Adams), a bubbly princess-to-be, is banished to New York City’s Times Square by a wicked queen. Fairytale romance gets a modern makeover when Giselle discovers that her true love is not a handsome prince but a jaded divorce lawyer. The swoon-worthy Patrick Dempsey co-stars so that’s us sold!

One Fine Day

We love this one! Jack (George Clooney) and Melanie (Michelle Pfeiffer) are two busy professionals who are trying to cope with the trials of single parenthood. When a school day-trip falls through, he and Melanie, who barely know each other and don’t seem to like each other very much, take turns caring for their kids. Mishap follows mishap, as Jack and Melanie grow closer…and closer, and closer!

Beauty and the Beast

This was the first animated film ever to receive a nomination for Best Picture. A prince is cursed to be a hideous beast forever – unless he finds true love before he turns 21! It seems unlikely, until he captures quirky beauty Belle as a prisoner and begins to fall in love. But the question is: will she fall in love with him too? And before it’s too late?

The Fault in Our Stars

Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit and a disdain for all things ‘normal.’ Before long, they start falling for each other. But it’s far from an ordinary teen relationship, since they met at a cancer support group…and one of them isn’t doing too well!

SHARE if you know mums who haven't a clue what to do with their kids this Valentine's!
