Devastated mum warns of the danger of fridge magnets

A devastated mum and dad are issuing a warning to parents everywhere not to leave magnets in the reach of children.

Their two-year old daughter Ava is now in intensive care after swallowing nine magnetic pellets which were stuck to their fridge.

Ava’s mum Lexi, who didn’t know she had swallowed the magnets at the time, noticed she was clutching her stomach in agony and rushed her to a nearby clinic – and while the doctor said it was a stomach flu Lexi wasn’t satisfied. She then brought her daughter to Texas Children’s Hospital where Ava was scanned and the magnets were detected.

And scarily, the magnets were tearing through poor little Ava to ‘find’ each other.

“Magnets find each other, even though skin,” Lexi said. “They had burrowed in her intestines, creating holes.”

Brave Ava has since undergone surgery to repair the tears but she still has a long way to go until she’s better.

“She's been fighting to live,” her mum said. “Don't have any magnets, if you have magnets, get them away. On top of a bookshelf or refrigerator isn't enough.”

What an important warning. It’s easy to place magnets on the fridge and assume they’re safe, but after this shocking story we’ll be making it a PRIORITY to ensure they’re out of reach of young kids.

We’re wishing Ava a speedy recovery.
